Charcoal - yes I'm talking about the type (well, a very similar thing) you use to stoke up your BBQ or heater - is brilliant for clearing up oily, blemish prone skin. See, when it comes to skincare sometimes natural ingredients are the best ingredients and Origins have hit the nail on the head with their range of face masks inspired by natural ingredients and remedies for skin complaints.
I much prefer face masks packaged in a tube over those packaged in pots and sachets, they're really easy to control how much you use and you can (in most cases, packaging depending) see how much you've used. The Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask is packaged inside an easy to use squeezable tube, its light enough to travel and thanks to its opaque design you can see when you need to stock up on another tube.
Origins Clear Improvement Active Mask has a clay-based formula that's soft to the touch at first and tightens against the skin as it dries, I usually wear mine for around ten minutes before rinsing with warm water. The mask doesn't dry uncomfortably tight, just enough to 'feel' it working, so I say sit back and relax with the mask on - make a hot drink, watch television, perhaps do some blogging (my favourite method).
In case you're worrying about the mask having a very potent scent of charcoal, as was I before my first use, I can promise you it has a pleasant scent with only mild tones of charcoal. It's definitely not overpowering or makes the mask difficult to wear; if you have any concerns about scent definitely pop in store and sniff the sample bottle for yourself!
I can't sing the praises for this mask highly enough, noticeable results are achieved after just one use and the long-term benefits are astounding. On the first use I found my skin to look really clean and peachy, to the touch it felt totally oil free and really soft. Replenished and purified would be a good way to describe the post-mask feeling. With long term use (one or two times a week, at most) my pores are reduced, blackheads are near eradicated and my skin is virtually oil-free for at least five days after use.

If you're looking for a weekly treatment to help control oil and/or blemishes then the Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask will really give you the results you're after, it did for me at least and now it's a firm regular in my skincare routine.

Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask retails for £20/100ml from Origins stockists such as John Lewis and Boots or directly from the Origins website.

  1. This sounds really good! I got a small sample of the 'out of trouble' mask, but this sounds great, especially because I have really oily skin:)xo

    1. I have combination skin and it works really well for balancing it out too, I can only imagine it's a dream for totally oily skin types. I'd definitely recommend requesting a sample in store, they gave me a small pot in store before I purchased that lasted 2 uses.

    1. I know you're on a spending ban so I'd say go to your local stockist (Debenhams, John Lewis, larger Boots) and request a sample pot, they are so willing to give out samples which is really useful for making a decision about whether to buy the product or not.

  3. I went into House of Fraser to buy this the other day but chicken out, I wish I had now, but now I'm on a spending ban! Drat!

    1. I don't think I could cope with a spending ban, I love to try new things so much! I am trying to make sure I use something up rather than repurchase however. Once you're off your ban I definitely recommend giving this a go, in the mean time why not pop to a local stockist and grab a sample to try!

  4. I have this, and it really is good. I have oily/combination skin, and I found after a few weeks that my face wasn't so oily and breakouts weren't so bad.

    Definitely recommend :)

    1. I'm not too much a fan of Body Shop Masks, I liked the Tea Tree one but didn't repurchase because I found the scent so overpowering. Origins are a little pricier but I say well worth the money, you only need to use a chickpea sized amount too.

  6. I've just forked out on three luxury skin care items from origins yesterday - out of trouble mask, ginzing eye cream and (my favourite) the vitazing moisturiser. I know £70 seems expensive to the naked eye but like you I think the quality of origins is amazing. And what's best, is you can see the physical improvements in such a short time span. I agree with what you said on a comment earlier that they are generous with there samples. I received a foaming cleanser and a exfoliator to try and the sizes are insane. Will easily last me a couple of months. I look forward to seeing more origin reviews from you as I'm eager to buy more :D xx

    1. I quite like the look of the Drink Up Mask but I think it's got an ingredient in it that my skin is sensitive to. I'd quite like to try the face scrub now.

    1. It is a little pricey but in my eyes you get well over 20 uses from the tube so it's less than £1 each use, which works out quite purse friendly considering single-use sachet masks are around £1 a go.

    1. Hi Eve, I couldn't say if this was suitable for sensitive skin, it's mainly targeted towards oily/problem skin. My advice would be to go into store and pick up a small sample (they will happily provide you with one complimentarily) and give it a go to see how you fare with it.
